Round 2 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs begins Thursday at 7:30pm.

New York, NY (SmithtownRadio.com)

Two of the original six face off against each other in the playoffs for the first time since 1973. We are all in for a treat. New York and Boston both faced game 7′s in their opening playoff series. Boston with an incredible comeback, rallied back being down 4-1 in the 3 period to win and advance in overtime. The Rangers who struggled to score at the Verizon Center, shut down the Capitals 5-0, in an incredible team performance. Probably one of their best games in the playoffs and maybe during this whole season.

Rangers are 2-1 against Boston in the regular season (One regulation loss, one overtime win, and one shootout win). The big difference that sits in my mind is that, the Rangers have not played Boston since the trade deadline. A steal for the Rangers with getting Clowe, Dorsett, Moore, and especially Brassard. All four of these players have made an impact on this team since they stepped foot on the Garden ice against Pittsburgh. Especially after the win in D.C, it will be really interesting to see how the Rangers will come out the first game against the Bruins.

Two of the big forwards, Rick Nash and Jaromir Jagr will be one of the talks of the week. Both players have no goals in this years playoffs. Jagr, 4 points, 0 goals, 4 assists. Nash, 2 points, 0 goals, 2 assists. It will be very interesting if these two players will break through and help their teams a lot more than what they did in round one.

It’s going to be an interesting series. After seeing what both teams did in their round one game sevens, it will be fun to watch. A very intense and physical series is in store for the Rangers and Bruins. The Eastern Conference Semi-Finals beings in Boston, Thursday night at 7:30pm on the NBCSN.

Rangers shutout Capitals to advance to round 2 of the playoffs.

New York, NY (SmithtownRadio.com)

We have to start off with one of the major reasons why the Rangers are in the second round of the playoffs. Henrik Lundqvist. Two consecutive back to back shutouts in Game 6 and in Game 7. He stopped the last 62 shots. The Capitals had 35 SOG on the Rangers goaltender tonight, but the King stood tall. During most of this series, Washington controlled a lot of offensive zone time, putting the Rangers on edge.

It was win or go home for both New York and Washington as they hit the ice for Game 7. First goal is always important but in this game it was be key. Aaron Asham, who has had a great series, starts of the goal scoring for the Rangers with a blast from the blue line. Remaining 1-0 at the end of the first period, Asham takes a high sticking penalty, giving the Capitals their first power play of the game. One thing the Rangers always tried to avoid was staying out of the box.

A successful penalty kill for the Rangers, leads to a successful second period. Henrik making key saves and guys shooting the puck with having guys in front of the net for rebounds. At 03:24, Taylor Pyatt puts in a rebound off the pad of Holby putting the Rangers up 2-0. Many thought this type of game would have been a one goal game difference. Del Zotto proved us wrong when he puts the puck past Holby to give the Rangers a commanding 3-0 lead at the end of two periods.

We knew the Capitals wanted to turn things around with a quick start. But they would lose all momentum quick. A turn over in the neutral zone leads to the Rangers having a quick start. The captain Ryan Callahan gets a breakaway goal 13 seconds into the period. Lundqvist shut down the capitals who had plently of scoring chances tonight. Derick Brassard has had an incredible playoff series as well, with 9 points. He had two assists tonight and one on the final goal of the game with a beauty move by Mats Zuccarello.

Rangers move on to face the Bruins Thursday night at 7:30pm in Boston. An original six team tough, physical playoff matchup.

Deer Park, NY (SmithtownRadio.com) – Two are dead – including a Smithtown man – while a mother and child remain in critical condition at local hospitals following a head-on crash in Deer Park Friday evening.

At 6:35 p.m., Robert Fattibene, 53, of Grandview Lane, Smithtown, was operating a 2001 Dodge Durango northbound on Commack Road when he crossed over into the southbound lane and collided with a 1999 Nissan Altima, police say. Fattibene and the driver of the Altima, Garcia Munoz, 32, of Macarthur Avenue, Brentwood, were pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner.

Yesenia Marilu Martinez Vasquez, 24, a passenger in the Nissan, was transported via Suffolk County Police helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital. Her three-year-old child, Justin Martinez, who is also Garcia Munoz’s son, was transported by North Babylon Rescue to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip. Both the mother and child are listed in critical condition.

The vehicles were impounded for safety checks, and the investigation is continuing.

Detectives are asking anyone with information about the crash to contact the First Squad at 631-854-8152.

Rangers tie the series after being down 0-2 to the Capitals.

New York, NY (SmithtownRadio.com)

“Resilient”, has been a word that has been brought up by a lot of the players in the Rangers locker room. Being down two games in the series against Washington, the Rangers ended up with two well deserved wins at the Garden to even the series.

During the first couple of games in Washington, the Rangers played well, but it wasn’t good enough to win a playoff game. Both games came down to which goaltender was going to let a deflected pass into the net. Unfourtanately, it was for the vezina finalist, Henrik Lundqvist. One thing about this New York Ranger hockey team is that nobody panics. We (the fans) do, but the players and coaches don’t, which is key.

As coach John Tortorella always says, “We take it one game at a time.” Monday night, the Rangers took care of game three to get them back into the series, with hopes to even it on Wednesday. The big thing that the Rangers showed on Monday, was that they don’t give up after Washington scored to even the game. Back and forth with goals and nobody on the Rangers bench was worried.

They are playing with much more confidence. A much different and much better team from the first two games in Washington. It’s now a series after last nights much needed 4-3 victory. Henrik stood tall in the end, and guys like Brassard, Stralman and Hagelin shined throughout the game. Confidence is key, and the Rangers have it going into Washington in hopes to take the series lead.

New York Rangers vs. Carolina Hurricanes

An important game for the Rangers as the faced off against Carolina. Two points stand in the way between them and the playoffs. Good starts are what this team always talks about and they did just that tonight. Derek Stepan gets things going to give the Rangers the early lead. That was followed by a goal from Brassard giving the Rangers a big 2-0 lead going into the second.

In all sports, momentum changes are amazing to see. Carolina gets a goal within the first five minutes of the second. After that, they tie the game at two, and that’s where things get a little shaky for the Rangers. Carolina turned on all gears and pretty much stopped the Rangers game in all aspects.

Carolina does not stop there. Within the first minute of the third, they take the lead away, leading the Rangers to do all they can do to win this game. Richards comes through with a shot off the board, which rebounds off Carolina’s goalie, into the net.

The tie game leads to overtime. Just one point away from clinching their playoff spot, and it came down to the captain. A beautiful shot from Callahan gets New York the win and a Playoff spot in the 2013 NHL post season. One more game left against New Jersey can do a lot to the standings as to who plays who in the first round, and it might make a big difference.

New York Rangers vs. Florida Panthers

After three strong wins, the Rangers were looking to continue the streak and get another win from Florida. It was a possible chance for the Rangers to clinch a playoff spot with a win and Winnipeg loss. A slow start for both teams led to a scoreless first period.

Looking for that first goal, the Rangers had a lot more chances than Florida, but Florida gets that lucky bounce first. They take the early lead and mostly played defense as the game progressed, stopping all the Rangers chances to get in front of the net.

In the third, the Rangers find a way to score by Moore charging the net and Pyatt putting in the rebound. Crashing the net was probably the only way the Rangers were going to score. Remaining tied for most of the third period; at 06:48 Brad Richards gets called for tripping putting Florida on the power play. They convert and regain the lead. With a few minutes left to play, Florida extend’s the lead from an empty net goal. The Rangers were trying to find anyway to score in the remaining minute of the game. Brassard puts in the puck to cut the lead down to 3-2, but unfortunately that would be the final score of the game.

Seemed like the Rangers were chasing the puck all night. Even though they had a 38-16 SOG advantage, they just couldn’t find their way to score. Rangers need to win. They will know that going into Thursday’s game because with a win OR a Winnipeg loss, they clinch a playoff spot. Just two more points.

Scoring Summary:
