Yaphank, NY (SmithtownRadio.com) – Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy and the Suffolk County Police Department would like to remind residents that during severe weather conditions, it is extremely important to use 911 only for true emergencies. Residents are advised to call their local precinct or (631) 852-COPS to report non-emergency situations to police.

“As the county prepares for the arrival of Hurricane Earl, we would like to take this opportunity to remind residents the importance of using 911 for true emergencies,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy. “By calling (631) 852-COPS for non-emergencies, residents are doing their part to ensure that those who are in need of immediate assistance are given top priority.”

“With the approach of Hurricane Earl and the potential of this dangerous storm to disrupt our lives in Suffolk County, it’s important that our residents understand that call volume into the 911 communication system tends to spike during such weather events,” said Suffolk Police Commissioner Richard Dormer. “It is thus important that residents reserve calls to 911 for true emergencies, so we are better able to respond quickly.”

The health and safety of Suffolk residents is the top priority for the police department. By calling their local precinct or using (631) 852-COPS for non-emergencies, residents are helping to ensure that police response to emergency calls will not be delayed. The phone numbers for SCPD precincts are the following: First Precinct, 854-8100; Second Precinct, 854-8200; Third Precinct, 854-8300; Fourth Precinct, 854-8400; Fifth Precinct, 854-8500; Sixth Precinct, 854-8600; Seventh Precinct, 852-8700.

Additionally, Suffolk Police would like to remind residents that if they need to report or check on a power outage, calls should be directed to the Long Island Power Authority’s storm center at either 1 (800) 490-0075 or (631) 755-6900. Calls regarding a downed power line should be reported to 911.

Kings Park, NY (SmithtownRadio.com) – A total of four fire departments were on the grounds of the former Kings Park Psychiatric Center in Kings Park Tuesday evening to fight a building fire.

The fire broke out in Building Number 7, which is among numerous abandon buildings on the grounds of the former state run hospital grounds.

There were crews from four different fire departments on scene including Kings Park, Smithtown and Commack Fire Departments. No word yet on the cause of the fire.

The hospital operated from 1885 to 1996. Building Number 7 is amongst the younger buildings on campus and stands nine stories tall. It was originally built as a geriatrics admission office and also included medical operating rooms on its top floors. At one point in time, the building was home to a nursery of newly born babies who’s mother were patients in the hospital. As the hospital shrank in its later years, the building was converted to admission and business offices. While abandoned, that is how the building stands today.

When the state closed the facility either releasing or transferring patients to Islip’s Pilgrim Psychiatric Center the building fell under disrepair. A large chunk of the hospital grounds contains such abandon buildings but portions of the waterfront property has been transformed into Nissequogue River State Park. Additionally, Pilgirm Psychatric Center runs several small out-homes on the grounds.
