A Winter Weather Advisory issued for 1am through 4pm Saturday as three to five inches of snow is possible by the time the snow stops tomorrow afternoon.

Temperatures remain on the warmer side tomorrow with a forecast high of 32 along the north shore. This means we could see a wetter snow and cannot rule out a changeover to sleet and rain by late tomorrow afternoon.

With warm ocean air to our south, the snow/rain freeze line will remain just off shore. Snow accumulation along the south shore will be limited from one to two inches.

If this line were to swing north, we’d see less snow. If temperatures climb above 32, we could again see less snow.

However, forecast models Friday evening remain confident temperatures will remain cold enough along the north shore and into Connecticut and the Lower Hudson Valley to see three to six inches of snow.

Nesconset, NY (SmithtownRadio.com) – Nesconset neighbors are banding together after a string of break-ins and pranks.

As the Giants secured a victory Sunday, someone or someones was securing their own victory stealing cash and jewelry from cars parked along Beau Jol Court.

Two cars parked along the Nesconset street Sunday had items stolen from them, police say.

Theresa Greco, who lives on the street, did not have anything stolen Sunday but says the neighborhood has seen its share of break-ins and pranks over the past year.

“Two homes were broken into last fall,” Greco says. “We’re a quiet neighborhood but we need to notice things.”

Neighbors are banding together to keep a watchful eye on the street.

“We’re not going to let them get comfortable and we’d like to see more police presence,” Greco says.

After the break-ins Sunday, neighbors were telephoning each other to alert one another of the crime, she says.

“If you see a suspicious car… say something,” Greco says. “We need to be more diligent.”

Police say the crimes occurred Sunday during the game, at some point between 3:45 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Other neighbors who believe items may have been stolen from their vehicles are asked to contact authorities.

New York (New York News Connection) – Hundreds of Internet technology workers protested Wednesday outside the offices of Sens. Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, who support legislation the demonstrators say would threaten Internet freedom by cracking down on piracy without guarding against censorship.

Protest organizer Jessica Lawrence explains why they came.

“Piracy is a huge issue, and it’s an issue that needs to be solved, but the way to solve it is not to come up with a cure that’s worse than the disease.”

Backers of the bills – including Hollywood studios, the recording industry and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce – say something has to be done about the online theft of movies and music, which by one estimate costs U.S. companies $135 billion a year. The tech industry – including Google, Yahoo and Twitter – says there has to be a better way, one that doesn’t risk snuffing out Internet freedom.

Amalia Deloney with the Center for Media Justice says Wednesday’s blackouts of web sites, Facebook pages and Twitter accounts had much of the country talking about the issue of Internet freedom – and showed the effectiveness of “digital demonstrations.”

“It’s very clear that people not only care very deeply about this issue but that the average person in the United States has a very, very good idea of what kind of Internet experience they want.”

Chaka Mkali, a Minneapolis artist and activist, opposes Internet censorship. He says communities of color have enough trouble closing the “digital divide” between those who can easily access the Internet and those hampered by underprivileged status.

“Historically marginalized communities and people of color, we shouldn’t have to face additional obstacles in our struggle to close that divide.”

Professor Lateef Mtima founded and directs the Institute for Intellectual Property and Social Justice at the Howard University School of Law. He says people mobilized and brought about changes in the proposed legislation.

“Now, average people understand that, hey, you know what, this stuff may seem sophisticated and unconnected to me at first, but when I have proper information, I now see what’s really going on. I now see how it concretely affects my interests.”

Smithtown, NY (SmithtownRadio.com) – The Superintendent of Smithtown schools is defending the district’s handling of an alleged assault at Smithtown High School West.

In a letter sent home to residents Tuesday, Ed Ehmann says the incident “was handled in an efficient, timely and appropriate manner.”

Ehmann’s letter comes one week after Gabrielle Petagna, 15, spoke publicly about the incident at a Board of Education meeting.

“I also feel betrayed by my school,” Petagna said during the meeting. “You would expect when something this terrible and violent happens that the school would do everything possible to punish the students involved.”

Watch Video: Petagna tells her story

The sophomore says she was attacked by an estranged friend and others inside a girls bathroom on December 7.

In his letter, Ehmann paints a picture of a ”violent physical behavior and bystanders not taking action to stop the fighting.”

Since Petagna came public, controversy has grown over whether or not the district handled the situation properly. Fueling the debate: a question over appropriate punishment for students involved in carrying out attack.

“Federal and State regulations regarding student privacy present districts from disclosing [student] consequences to the community at large,” Ehmann explains in his letter.

The victim’s family says the school failed to call police or an ambulance after the attack. However, Suffolk County police told Newsday they were notified immediately after the incident.
