Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has stepped down from office, a post he has held for 30 years. Egyptian Vice President Omar Suleiman delivered the news on state television. He says the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces will “run the affairs of the country.”

In Cairo, where protests have grabbed headlines for days on end, protesters are chanting: “Egypt is free!”

The Egyptian military is letting crowds run free and celebrate without intervention, according to media reports.

President Barack Obama said Mubarak’s act of resignation is not the end of a transition “it’s the beginning.”

Obama was in a meeting Friday morning when he first learned of Mubarak’s resignation. He is said to have left the meeting to watch television outside the Oval Office.

Obama made an address hours later where he praised the revolution. He also thanked the Egyptian military for acting responsibly throughout the protests. Obama is calling on the military to insure a safe and orderly transition.

During the days leading up to today’s news, speculation has grown over what would happen if President Mubarak stepped aside. One concern was organizations like the Muslim Brotherhood may take advantage of the situation to promote their own agenda. It is expected President Obama will call for the immediate construction of a democracy in the arab state.

Another key issue Obama’s administration is likely to monitor, is what potential ripple effects this will have across the region. Additionally, it is unclear if a new Egyptian government would continue to be an alley to the United States.

Legis. Jon Cooper, a democrat from Lloyd Harbor, hopes the bill would force people to take precautions to improve roadway safety.

A driver who fails to remove snow from the roof or other parts of their car could face a $75 fine.

The bill was originally proposed in March 2007 by Cooper. Unlike it’s first go around, the revised proposal does not make indications of how much snow would have to be removed. In 2007, Cooper was pushing for a bill which fined drivers if there was two or more inches of snow on the car.

A spokesperson for County Executive Steve Levy told Newsday Levy is evaulating the proposal.

The bill go before the Legislature’s Public Safety Committee in February.

Sound-off: Do you think driver’s should be required to remove snow from their cars before they go driving?
