2,000+ outages, road closures after Main St. transformer fire

Smithtown, NY (SmithtownRadio.com) – Over 2,000 Smithtown-area Long Island Power Authority customers lost electricity shortly before 7 a.m. Monday after a fire broke out inside a transformer on Main Street.

The fire and related outage effected 2,238 customers around 6:45 a.m., LIPA spokesperson Mark Gross tells SmithtownRadio.com. 1,921 of those customers had electricity restored in under 40 minutes while the remaining 317 customer were back on under 90 minutes.

Utility crews conducting repairs shutdown an eastbound lane of Main Street near Landing Avenue much of Monday.
