Bellport Bay, NY (SmithtownRadio.com) – Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad detectives are investigating the death of a man who was found floating by his boat in the Great South Bay Thursday morning.

At 11:15 a.m., Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau officer discovered Steven Maichen floating by a boat in Bellport Bay approximately three-quarters of a mile southeast of Bellport Dock and Marina in the Great South Bay. Police believed Maichen had engine trouble because the cover of his engine was removed and found inside the boat. Marine Bureau officers removed Maichen from the water and transported him to the dock where he was pronounced dead by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner.

Maichen, 55, of  East Patchogue, was taken to the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office where an autopsy will be performed.

The death appears to be non-criminal. The investigation is continuing.
