Farmingville, NY (SmithtownRadio.com) – A man coming home Monday afternoon stabbed a man he found climbing out of his house, Suffolk police say.

Around 2:15 p.m., a Farmingville man arrived home and observed a man exiting his residence through a rear window as he pulled into his driveway. The homeowner grabbed a knife from his car and confronted the intruder, who was also armed with a knife.

The burglar, Alex Debono, 20, attempted to flee through the backyard and a struggle ensued.  During the struggle, the homeowner stabbed Debono in the leg.  Debono was able to escape after he climbed over a fence and fled to a nearby Kmart.

Sixth Precinct Patrol Officer Daniel Furey apprehended Debono as he attempted to leave the store, located at 2280 North Ocean Ave. in Farmingville.  Items stolen from the victim’s home, including a watch and an Xbox, were recovered in the store’s bathroom.

Dobono was taken to Stony Brook University Medical Center where he was being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.  Sixth Squad detectives charged Dobono with Burglary 1st Degree and Criminal Possession of a Weapon 4th Degree.

The homeowner, whose name was not released, is not believed to have been injured.

Debono, of Miller Place, is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on August 14.
