Nesconset’s own Maria Michta is off to London today. The Sachem High School grad will march in front of a cheering crowd Friday during the Opening Ceremonies of the Olympic games. But last night she was in a hometown crowd. Suffolk County Legislator John M. Kennedy Jr. and Nesconset Chamber of Commerce presented Michta with a check for two thousands dollars. The money will be used to help cover the travel costs of her family – which will head to London in August to watch her compete in the racewalking event. After seven-month, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone has decided to appoint the police department acting-commissioner as the departments actual commissioner. Newsday reports Bellone is expected to announce Edward Webber as commissioner later today.
