Five animals died in second floor five above pet shop

Smithtown, NY (SmithtownRadio.com) – 70 animals rescued and another five perished in a fire on Main Street in Smithtown Monday.
Around 11:50 a.m., a 20-year-old man discovered a fire in a second floor room above Pick of the Litter pet shop, according to Assistant Chief Tim Murphy of the Smithtown Fire Department.
Firefighters from five area fire departments pulled cribs full of animals from the first floor show room while others battled the flames and smoke on the second floor.
Five dogs who died in the fire were all on the second floor, Murphy says.
The individual who found the fire was taken to Saint Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown as a pre-caution.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Smithtown Fire Marshals office. Most of the animals have been turned over to Suffolk County Animal Control.
The Smithtown, Nesconset, St. James, Kings Park and Hauppauge fire departments were all on-scene.
