Copiague, NY (SmithtownRadio.com) – Suffolk County Police First Squad detectives are investigating a motor vehicle crash that killed a pedestrian in Copiague Thursday night.
Around 10:30 p.m., Jose Hernandez was crossing Sunrise Highway at Bayview Avenue in Copiague when he was struck by an unidentified vehicle driving eastbound on Sunrise Highway, police say. The vehicle fled the scene.
Hernandez was then struck again – this time by a 1997 Mercury Cougar, driven by James Diez, 66, of West Babylon. Diez who remained at the scene.
Hernandez, 38, who was undomiciled, was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner.
Police are continuing the search for the first driver. Detectives are asking anyone with information about this crash to call the First Squad at 631-854-8152 or call anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential.
