Alcides Melgar drove his 2008 Nissan Altima out of a parking spot at 1024 Suffolk Ave. at 2:20 a.m. and struck a pedestrian and two parked vehicles, police say. Melgar fled the scene heading eastbound on Suffolk Avenue before rear-ending a 2008 Toyota Corolla east of Fulton Street.
The pedestrian, Joshua Serrano, 26, of Central Islip, suffered serious leg injuries and was transported by East Brentwood Rescue to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore. The driver of the Corolla, Christopher Ocloo, 23, of Central Islip, was also transported to Southside Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
Melgar, was arrested at the scene of the crash with the Corolla and was charged with Driving While Intoxicated and Leaving the Scene of an Accident. He will be held overnight at the Third Precinct and arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on July 5.
Melgar’s vehicle was impounded for a safety check and the investigation is continuing. Detectives are asking anyone with information on this crash to call the Third Squad at 631-854-8352 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential.
