Kings Park, NY (SmithtownRadio.com) – Two fisherman are lucky to be alive after being pulled from the waters off the Kings Park shoreline early Saturday morning.

Around 1:20 a.m., the two were fishing on a sandbar between Short Beach and The Bluff when one man slipped off the sandbar and into the water, Suffolk police say.  The strong currents pulled him away from his fishing companion, who had jumped in to save him.

Nearby boaters loading their vessel onto a trailer at The Bluff were the first to hear the screams for help from the struggling fishermen.

“We were docking our boat ready to leave when we just heard ‘help,’” says Jakub Przybylowicz, one of the civilians who helped rescue the stranded fishermen. “So we called 911 and we dropped our boat back in the water.”

The fishermen and Good Samaritans were evaluated by medical personnel once back onshore. No one was transported to the hospital.

The Suffolk County Police Department, United States Coast Guard, and numerous area fire departments including the Kings Park, Northport, St. James, Nesconset assisted in the search and rescue.

I use to swim here years ago when I was 12.  When you fall off the dune, you stand back up.  It’s about 2 feet deep and you can walk from the bluff to Short Beach and back.
