Lake Ronkonkoma Dad disappeared during swim Friday night Lake Ronkonkoma, NY (SmithtownRadio.com) – The remains of a swimmer who went missing in Lake Ronkonkoma Friday night have been found, Suffolk police announced Saturday.

Around 8:30 p.m., Sammie Weiner, 40, of Lake Ronkonkoma, was at Lake Ronkonkoma Suffolk County Park on Portion Road with his 9-year-old son and 10-year-old daughter when he went to retrieve a remote controlled boat that was disabled some 200 feet off shore, police say. The boat was owned and operated by a stranger.

Weiner swam out to the boat when subsequently went under water and did not resurface. A search and rescue effort by the Suffolk County Marine Dive Team and area fire departments combed the waters for Weiner Friday evening. Shortly after 5 p.m. Saturday, police found his remains close to where he was last seen alive.

An examination will be conducted by the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner to determine the cause of Weiner’s death.

Police are continuing their investigation.
