Hauppauge, NY (SmithtownRadio.com) – Numerous area fire departments are responding to a basement fire at the Perry B. Duryea, the New York State  office building that houses the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Initial reports indicate a transformer caught fire in the basement around 4 p.m. The fire was contained to the basement.

Power is being turned off to the entire building while crews from area fire departments work to get the blaze under control. Responding crews include the Smithtown, Hauppauge, Commack, Kings Park and Nesconset fire departments.

Traffic on Veteran’s Memorial Highway remains open but drivers are advised to watch for responding emergency vehicles.

This is not the Dennison Bldg. The Dennison Bldg is a County Bldg. The fire is in the State office Bldg where the Motor Vehicle office is located.

You are absolutely correct, @7fda5c0b7bcf7cb90842b2ff2b3c887f:disqus . We updated the location in updates after the initial report to correct for the error.

Curious if they are going to help the people who were on line at Motor Vehicles for hours before this happened.  Let then go first Monday or give a special time to come in???
