Bohemia, NY (SmithtownRadio.com) – A 5-year-old boy suffered minor injuries Thursday when his intoxicated mother caused a motor vehicle crash in Bohemia.
Veronica Austin, 22, was driving a 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer westbound on the Sunrise Highway North Service Road in Bohemia when she lost control of her vehicle and drove into a wooded area west of Pond Road at 11:15 p.m., police say. Austin had her 5-year-old son in the vehicle with her at the time of the crash.
The child was transported to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue by Community Ambulance and was treated for minor injuries sustained during the crash.
Austin, of Central Islip, was charged with one count of Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated and With a Child Passenger 15 Years Old or Younger (Leandra’s Law). She was also charged with one count of DWI, one count of Endangering the Welfare of a Child and Unlawful Possession of Marijuana.
Austin is scheduled to be arraigned Friday in First District Court in Central Islip. The investigation is continuing. Detectives are asking anyone with information about this crash to call the Fifth Squad at 631-854-8552.
