The Avengers premiered over the weekend and raked in record-breaking numbers. The movie grossed $200.3 million in its opening weekend. The film is the first to break $200 million in three days. It beat the record previously held by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 by over $30 million. The Avengers took in $18.7 million in midnight screenings alone and took in $80.5 million for the entire day on Friday.
Dexter actress Julie Benz tied the knot over the weekend to her boyfriend, marketing executive Rich Orosco. Orosco proposed to Benz in June 2011 with an $80,000 engagement ring and a surprise Mexican fiesta with their friends. Staying with the theme, the couple married on Cinco de Mayo. This is the second marriage for Benz, she was previously married to actor John Kassir for 9 years.
TBS is in talks to bring ABC’s Cougar Town to its network if ABC does not renew the series. The show is currently in its third season and has had weak ratings. A rep for TBS’ parent company, Turner Entertainment Networks, would neither confirm nor deny the news, saying, “Should the show become available, Turner looks at all opportunities presented to us that fit our brand.”
TNT has renewed Southland for a fifth season. Michael Wright, president and head of programming for TNT, said in a statement, “Season after season, critics and fans alike have championed TNT’s Southland as one of television’s best dramas. This year, the show has not only solidified its impassioned fan base, but also picked up some new young-adult devotees along the way.” Southland has averaged more than 2.9 million total viewers this past season. Season 5 will premiere in February 2013.
