Highly contagious respiratory disease sickens another
Hauppauge, NY (SmithtownRadio.com) – Cases of the highly contagious respiratory disease Pertussis continue to pop up across the greater Smithtown area nearly a year after the first case was reported in Smithtown.
Parents were notified about a new case of Whooping Cough at Hauppauge High School in a letter from the Suffolk County Department of Public Health earlier this week.
In the letter, the county reminds parents the best defense against the illness is vaccination. A combination Tetanus/Pertussis vaccine is available and parents or physicians with questions about pertussis may contact the Suffolk County Department of Health Services’ Division of Public Health at 631-853-3055.
Continuing Coverage: Whooping Cough in School
Two weeks ago the Commack school district added three new cases of whooping cough. These new cases bring the total number of infected individuals in Commack to at least eight since December.
Kings Park schools has reported at least two cases with the most recent being in March at RJO Intermediate School.
The first area case was reported in Smithtown last June.
