From 9-7 to Super Bowl triumph. The New York Giants are world champions! They defeat the New England Patriots 21-17 to win Super Bowl XLVI. Eli Manning was named MVP after a night in which he had 296 passing yards and a touchdown pass. They went up 9-0 in the first quarter after a Patriots safety and a Victor Cruz touchdown catch. New England responded with 17 unanswered points and were up 17-9 early in the third quarter. The Giants responded with two field goal drives to cut the lead to 17-15 heading in to the final quarter of the NFL season. The moment of the night and arguably the Giants season was a 38 yard catch that Mario Manningham made in the closing minutes of the game to help set up a game winning scoring drive. Ahmad Bradshaw scored on a six yard run to seal the deal for the Giants or so it seemed. The Patriots got the ball back with 57 seconds left and tried to mount a comeback of all comebacks. The game ended after Tom Brady’s 50+ plus yard pass attempt was tipped away in a crowded end zone.
This is their fourth Super Bowl win in franchise history and the seventh time that the Giants have been NFL champions.
Manningham’s catch and the back and forth nature of the game wasn’t the only major headline of Super Bowl XLVI. The halftime show had a controversial moment, although this time it wasn’t a wardrobe malfunction. During her performance in one of Madonna’s song, the singer M.I.A. flipped the bird in front of an audience of millions. It is not yet known how the NFL or the FCC will react to this incident, but we will continue to bring you updates as they happen.
Knicks and Nets return to action tonight. The Knicks struggles continued over the weekend and go in to tonight’s game against the Utah Jazz having lost three of their last ten games. Tip off is at 7:30 on MSG. Meanwhile the Nets take on Derrick Rose and the Chicago Bulls at 7:30 on YES.
