Lane to be eliminated in newly announced DOT changes to Main Street

Westbound traffic, approaching the camera, will be forced down to one lane starting in the spring.

Smithtown, NY (SmithtownRadio.com) – Big changes are coming to Main Street Smithtown.

In a closed door meeting yesterday in Hauppauge, local officials met with the Department of Transportation to hash out a plan to eliminate one westbound lane on the state road, Newsday reports.

The plan calls for eliminating one of two westbound lanes and replacing it with a stripped median and turning lane along portions of Route 25 / 25A between Elm Street and Route 111.

Roadway changes are expected in the spring.

Continuing Coverage: Safety on Main Street

The busy stretch of Jericho Turnpike has been the site of numerous fatal accidents, including the 2009 hit-and-run of 12-year-old Courtney Sipes.

Your Thought: What do you think of the roadway changes?

I do not think that the elimination of a lane is going to solve the fact that cars speed down Main St and blow through the red lights. As an employee of a Main St business I have customers that have admitted that they blow through “this light and that light” all of the time because there is no enforcement. Getting rid of a westbound lane will only cause drivers to re-route through the quiet streets north of Main St. Epic fail on the DOT and Town of Smithtown’s part.

They should do something.  Crossing main street is like running out into the Indy 500….

put traffic cams in. Don’t remove a lane, that will only make congestion worse.

Why not just put speed bumps in? That way everytime we go over one we can all think of the people that have been run over on Main Street. That is just as rediculous as removing one lane and causing a bigger choke point than the road already is. What about using the over paid law enforcement, or what was aforementioned below, traffic cams?? Glad to see the collective genius that is our public officals hard at work. I will be avoiding Main Street once these changes take place

This will considerably slow down the response time of EMS vehicles at Rush Hour traffic…How so?Well if there is an emergency during rush hour all the lanes including the turning lanes will be occupied and clogged making Main Street impassable for EMS vehicles.

who are these elected officials?  I for one would love to campaign these people out of office – if you are going to unilaterally close roads that citizens rely upon then it should be put up for  REFERENDUM!!!!  Closing one westbound lane is the least intelligent possible solution to the issue
