Shirley, NY (SmithtownRadio.com) – A five-year-old boy from West Islip has died following a horrific crash in Shirley Saturday morning.

Steven Kinalis was driving a 2007 Toyota Scion eastbound on Sunrise Highway when his vehicle rear-ended a 2004 Dodge pickup truck, driven by Kevin Gaffney, 36, of West Islip, just east of William Floyd Parkway in Shirley. The truck then left the road and struck a tree.

Gaffney’s 5-year-old son was critically injured in the crash and airlifted to Stony Brook University Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries. Gaffney, his wife, 7-year-old daughter and 2-year-old son were treated at Stony Brook for non-life-threatening injuries.

Seventh Squad detectives charged Kinalis, 30, of Ronkonkoma, with Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs. Kinalis, who refused medical treatment following the crash, will be arraigned Sunday at First District Court in Central Islip.
