St. James man arrested after pointing laser at aircraft, police helicopterSt. James, NY (SmithtownRadio.com) – A St. James man pointing a laser at aircraft was located after pointing the laser at a responding police helicopter.

David Smith, 21, pointed a green laser at a fixed wing aircraft Friday evening, police say. The pilot notified the Federal Aviation Administration and Suffolk police responded.

Suffolk County Police Department Helicopter Four, piloted by police officers Frank Lombardi and David Williams, arrived on the scene and was too met with the green laser. In conjunction with ground units, Suffolk police located Smith at his home on King Arthurs Court.

At approximately 10:45 p.m., Suffolk County Police arrested Smith and charged him with Obstructing Government Administration 2nd Degree. The case has also been referred to the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey Terrorism Task Force, who may pursue additional charges.

The investigation is continuing.

    Stupidity has no boundaries

He’s a good kid from a good family and a great neighborhood. I doubt that he realized what he was doing was  extremely dangerous! I really hope they don’t spend too much of our tax dollars prosecuting this case…maybe they can just charge him with stupidity!

He may be a “good kid”, whatever that’s supposed to mean, but he’s an incredibly stupid one at that. If at 21 he wasn’t able to come to the conclusion that it was a poor idea to point a laser at an airborne aircraft, he got what he deserved…leave it to a smithtown east graduate, love my alma mater *rolls eyes*
