Shirley, NY (SmithtownRadio.com) - Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad detectives are investigating the drowning death of an East Islip man who was windsurfing in Bellport Bay this afternoon.

Joseph Rocco was windsurfing in Bellport Bay off Parkview Drive and Grandview Drive in Shirley at approximately 4:00 p.m. Rocco subsequently went under water and was discovered by a bystander on the shore.

Rocco, 68, of 143 Sherry St., East Islip, was transported by Mastic Beach Ambulance Company to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue, where he was pronounced dead.

The investigation is continuing.
