Brentwood, NY (SmithtownRadio.com) - Suffolk County Police Third Squad detectives are investigating a motor vehicle crash that killed a physically-challenged 12-year-old Holbrook boy in Brentwood Wednesday.

Robert Giffen, 42, of 145 Avenue C, Holbrook, was driving a 2000 Chevrolet van eastbound on the Long Island Expressway when he lost control of the van, which veered across the lanes of traffic, struck the guardrail on the right shoulder and overturned.

The boy, who was seated in the rear, was partially ejected out of the rear driver’s side window. He was transported by Suffolk County Police helicopter to Stony Brook University Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries. Giffen, the boy’s nurse, was not injured.

The van was impounded for a safety check and the investigation is continuing.

The Hauppauge Fire Department, along with the Brentwood Fire Department, responded to the incident.

Anyone who may have witnessed this crash and has not yet been interviewed by detectives is asked to call the Third Squad at 631-854-8352. All calls will be kept confidential.
