East Moriches, NY (SmithtownRadio.com) - Suffolk County Police Seventh Squad detectives are investigating a two-car motor vehicle crash that killed a woman in East Moriches this afternoon.

Panayiotis Georgiou, 45, was driving a 2005 Mercedes Benz ML500 eastbound on Montauk Highway when he lost control of his vehicle near Mill Pond Lane, crossed into the westbound lane of traffic and struck a 2002 Toyota Camry driven by Virginia Greco, 63, at approximately 2:20 p.m. After striking the Camry, Georgiou’s vehicle went off of the roadway and struck a tree. Brittany Mowdy, 23, a passenger in Georgiou’s vehicle, was fatally injured in the crash.

Mowdy, of 160 Cranberry Drive, Mastic Beach, was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead, where she was later pronounced dead. Georgiou, of 23 North Paquatuck Ave., East Moriches, was transported to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue, for treatment of back injuries. Greco, of Hemlock Court, Selden, was not injured in the crash.

Following an investigation by Seventh Squad detectives, Georgiou was charged with Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs. He will be arraigned at a later date.

Both vehicles were impounded for safety checks and the investigation is continuing.

Detectives are asking anyone with information on this incident to contact the Seventh Squad at 631-852-8752 or call anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS. All calls will remain confidential.

This is confusing because I know someone who was there at the scene and she was pulled out of the Mercedes. Regardless, she lost her life way too soon. My heart goes out to her and her family! Another sad drug related accident. SO PREVENTABLE!

  • Breezy

I am just so upset about it. My heart and prayers are with the Mowdy family and Brittany’s precious little children.

Too bad the driver is still alive; I saw the whole thing happen; he just missed me; passed a car on his right doing about 90 mph and then lost it trying to get back in lane; no way you can go that fast on that road without risking lives.  He had a death wish; too bad it was a nice girl that died instead of an idiot cypriot behind the wheel.

It is too bad the driver survived. Now, he has the power to kill others. Hopefully, he will hit another tree and not be so lucky and survive next time around.

Joe, I hope you gave a statement to the police. If you have not, please do so.  Your help is greatly appreciated.

I hope he rots in jail for taking a mother away from her children, and suffers just as we were all made to because of his actions
