East Moriches, NY (SmithtownRadio.com) - Suffolk County Police Seventh Squad detectives are investigating a two-car motor vehicle crash that killed a woman in East Moriches this afternoon.
Panayiotis Georgiou, 45, was driving a 2005 Mercedes Benz ML500 eastbound on Montauk Highway when he lost control of his vehicle near Mill Pond Lane, crossed into the westbound lane of traffic and struck a 2002 Toyota Camry driven by Virginia Greco, 63, at approximately 2:20 p.m. After striking the Camry, Georgiou’s vehicle went off of the roadway and struck a tree. Brittany Mowdy, 23, a passenger in Georgiou’s vehicle, was fatally injured in the crash.
Mowdy, of 160 Cranberry Drive, Mastic Beach, was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead, where she was later pronounced dead. Georgiou, of 23 North Paquatuck Ave., East Moriches, was transported to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue, for treatment of back injuries. Greco, of Hemlock Court, Selden, was not injured in the crash.
Following an investigation by Seventh Squad detectives, Georgiou was charged with Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs. He will be arraigned at a later date.
Both vehicles were impounded for safety checks and the investigation is continuing.
